ACA 101: The Subtle Act of Academic Validation

You’re ever in a room filled with people who believe in you, who see your dexterity, and who encourage you to reach for the stars. For students, this room is the classroom, and the people are their educators. But what happens when this room falls silent? When the validation, recognition, and encouragement that fuel academic success are absent? In this void, self-doubt creeps in, motivation wanes, and the love of learning begins to fade. And this is the sickening state of education in today’s Nigeria. This is where Academic Validation comes in – the subtle yet powerful act of acknowledging, supporting, and empowering students to never settle for the less but aim for the sky, for it is the limit.

     The constant debates among students’ fuels the necessity for this article. The debate of the century— whether to acknowledge and affirm students’ academic efforts, progress and achievement or unintentionally discourage students from pursuing their academic interests. The latter fights headlong with the former and that shows the repulsive state of a country that contends with her counterparts. Academic Validation is that key that opens the door for opportunities; it is that gem that makes one a rare gem. It involves providing feedback, support, and encouragement to help students feel valued, motivated, and confident in their academic pursuits.

Academic Validation helps students’ develop a positive self-image and confidence in their abilities. It’s a treasure one carries around without feeling inferior in any situation, whatsoever. It encourages students to take risks, persist in the face of challenges, and strive for excellence. Outstanding students’ stands out outstandingly. They’re different from regular students. And it’s evident in their level of participation in class discussions, regularity in classes, critical thinking, creativity and taking lead roles in group assignments or presentations. Academic Validation contributes to improved academic performance, retention, and overall success. Students who receive validation tend to have higher grades, better test scores, and increased academic achievement. They are more likely to stay engaged, motivated, and committed to their academic pursuits, leading to higher retention rates. Academic Validation  has a positive impact on students’ self-esteem, confidence, and resilience, setting them up for success not only in academics but also in their personal and professional lives.

When we don’t validate academic excellence, we— Undermine students’ confidence in their abilities, leading to self-doubt and decreased motivation; this will create an environment where students question their own abilities, leading to anxiety and decreased performance. Students’ who discourage academic excellence fail to express themselves and think creatively, leading to a lack of engagement and innovation.This is also a key contribution to students feeling like impostors, leading to feelings of inadequacy.

In conclusion, it’s encouraging for students’ who wish to excel in their academic pursuit to directly impact others by being a catalyst for change. Non-governmental organisations like Launchpad Foundation, helps to raise a generation of young bright minds who are enthusiastic about education; aid their academic journey via skills, mentorship and free tertiary education.
